Sam Smith just opened up about his personal life to The Sunday Times, days before his new album ‘The Thrill of it All’ comes out.
Sam came out in 2014 but says didn’t address his sexuality in his music then because he wasn’t ready: “Looking back on it, it was the fear of saying the wrong thing and offending…And I was 19 when I started writing the first album. I’d just moved to London from a village — I was literally the only gay in the village. I didn’t know what I wanted to say.”
Fashion was also a hot topic! He says: “I love a heel. I’ve got loads of heels at home. People don’t know this, but when I was 17, I remember becoming obsessed with Boy George and Marilyn Monroe, and all that. There was one moment in my life where I didn’t own a piece of male clothing, really. I would wear full make-up every day in school, eyelashes, leggings with Dr Martens and huge fur coats, for two-and-a-half years.”
When asked about his gender, Sam keeps things open: “I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man.”
He also just confirmed that he is off the market when he visited Ellen this week: “I’m not single, which is crazy. It’s weird bringing out an album and not being single. Because when I brought In the Lonely Hour, I was so lonely. But now I’m singing songs about another guy, but I’m quite happy so it’s quite weird.” Sam has been seen out with actor Brandon Flynn from the Netflix show ’13 Reasons Why’, and is reportedly his new boyfriend.
You can hear Sam Smith’s new album ‘The Thrill of It All’ on November 3rd!
